What are YOU playin' ? (game thread)

Recommended Posts

I never liked much Paradox strategy games, though I have Stellar and tried Europa Universalis. However a historian blog I follow had an interesting critique

These days I am trying to get into some of the games I got during lockdown. GRIS is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played, both image and music. And non-violent, except emotionally. To compensate I got several post apocalyptic isometric games. The expansion of Underrail, The Expedition, and Wasteland 3. Dark humor, hard choices and a bleak future, that fortunately happens to very small models, so the violence seems less gruesome. Starting the last stage in Wasteland 3, I expect to finish it this week. Other games I enjoyed in this post-apocalyptic mind set were Mutant Year Zero, a reskinned X-com without the base mechanics and Borderlands 3, closer to the original than Borderlands 2. I also got Metro Exodus, the third in the Metro series, but I quitted after getting stuck at a certain point. I will probably get back to it when I finish Wasteland 3. Outside the post-apocalypse I really enjoyed the mix of fantasy and renaissance in Greedfall, an Indy RPG with quite good graphics and an interesting mechanic for firearms. I got quite involved in the story and finished it quite fast.

It seems my 2015 laptop will not be able to handle Cyberpunk. I got it partly to play The Witcher 3, so it may be time to get a new one.

Woohoo!  First Youtuber to react to Neofeud!  And he picked up on the H.R. Giger influence as well!   EDIT: So Kathy Rain was great but moves at a pretty glacial pace (relative to action gam

On a random note, if any of you were ever interesting in trying Dirt Rally out, it's free to play this weekend! And on sale for $18 since Dirt 4 comes out next month.   I just played all the

I will try it before buying a new one. Christmas and post-Christmas would be a good moment to get a big rebate in prices, though this year is a bit strange.

Getting to what seems like Wasteland 3 ending. No plot twists, no big surprises.

To approach it fresh I have taken a break (I try to starve my obsessions) and I fired up Pathfinder Kingmaker, a strong transposition of the pen and paper RPG, to test the recently implemented turn based combat. It seems backward to leave the smooth flowing simultaneous combat as the PC allows, to go sequential, an artifact of the limitations of human minds. But it helps slow humans beat the AI, so maybe that is the reason. I do not see any other benefit, as fights take longer and feel less realistic... Or maybe it compensates the weakness of the character's AI compared to other games.

Fuckit. I'm doing "Eclipse Phase". Here's my wiki with the elevator pitch: https://boomzilla.io/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

It can be a kinda weird/hard-to-wrap-your-mind-around setting in some ways, but I love it.

I'm mostly hitting up friends on Facebook, but @s.smigiel (or anyone else interested), feel free to hit me up here, or wherever else on the net :)

Yeah, I'm down.

Downloading the Quick Start rules as I type, will look them over this weekend.

Let me know.

Has anyone watched Crusader Kings 3 on Twitch. Holy crap is it beyond complex. I've been following the streamer Etalyx's game with quick jump cuts through his old streams (mostly because he's streamed like 100 hours of content so far and he's maybe 1/3rd done with a single game as near as I can tell). At any rate, it's crazy and amazing and all politics and intrigue and what religious system and political system you have. And who you ally yourself… and how you train your children… and what traits you try and imbue in them. Etc etc etc. Most complicated thing I think I've seen from a gaming perspective, lol.

Dwarf Fortress is probably still a bit more complicated ;)

I've played quite a bit of Crusader Kings 2. I will probably pick up CK3 at some point. It's true that it is a very complex game, but once you've learned a bit about the interface most of the complexity becomes self-evident. From then on it's just a matter of experimenting to see how different systems work with each other, and really that's half the fun of it. CK2 is actually much more complex, because it has years of DLC piling on more and more features. So even though CK2 is free to play now, I wouldn't recommend it to new players.

So I went ahead and bought Art of Rally for $25 on Steam. It's actually really gorgeous, runs on Mac, Windows or Linux and is just kind of relaxing to drive through and admire the scenery in.

This guy talks about what a hard-core sim it is under the hood, but TBH, there were only about 4 tracks over the course of the entire Class 2 series that I ever had to repeat (and I was repeating because I would get 4th not 1st) on Normal Difficulty).

The semi-lockdown that soon will become a full lockdown is good for computer games. I have spent the week playing the Outer Planets, an Obsidian game with a short plot, a Fallout NV feeling and a Borderlands setting. Short and sweet, though a bit too short for me, and the fake sandbox is obvious. Quite good visually and I really cared for some of the stories. Much darker than it seems.

The previous week I had been playing the original Fallout throwback Wasteland 3, much shorter than 2 and without the feeling of freedom. Nice visually and well balanced, the decisions matter but you cannot shake the feeling of being on rails with several exchange points to decide the end result.

Now replaying the Shadowrun series, Xcom type skirmishes joined by a linear plot.

Too much linearity, both in games and in my own mental preferences. I suppose it is a reaction to the uncertainty outside.

‘Genshin Impact’ like everyone else, but since you don’t really have to buy anything yet, I’ve started purchasing the soundtracks instead.

And unlike the clever, who have set the game to Japanese where it plays better, I have mine on Mandarin.  There might probably still is localization, but I try.

And the character of Paimon, which is a bit different in each language, is more of its own take in Mandarin.

This is the way of the future for anime:   Game set to English interface but the audio is in the original language plus subtitles.  It makes a difference.

So my first save file for Red Dead Redemption 2 was like Nov 3rd, 2018(!!!) and I finally finished the damn game off this weekend, lol.

Amazing story, amazing world, but so very, very many things to get distracted by. I think I spent most of 2018 starting out on a mission, getting distracted by an animal crossing my path or a dude on the side of the road or whatever and ending up 50 miles away on the wrong side of the map from the quest, with like 10 pelts on my horse and no way to get back without dying in some outlaw gang attack… Glad I persevered though, it was good to know what the heck happened to everyone. Be sure and pay attention during the credits too, as they wrap up a lot of the little side stories (and even link RDR1 & RDR2) via little vignettes sprinkled into them.

Absorbed in Cyberpunk 2077. A bit surprised that my five year old laptop (that I bought partly to play Witcher Wild Hunt) can handle it at medium. Some weird mechanics, less smooth than Witcher 3, I still value highly that I spent three hours in the wake and farewell to a dead friend, just talking , reminiscing and drinking. Now cruising the city on a bike while Keanu Reeves berates me and I wait for several people to get back to me. I could just wait or sleep for five seconds, but I enjoy the cruising.

It is cool that lots of detail of the RPGs Cyberpunk 2013 and 2020. Specially Rogue, a fixation for many teens.

Yeah, I'm having a lot of fun with it too. Playing on the PS5, just because I decided it would be more fun in the living room and the PS5 should be getting an upgrade down the road a little ways to support it completely. (Or a long ways—who knows with their shipping schedules, lol.) But at any rate despite crashing about once an hour, it is quite fun between crashes. I am so inundated with side missions and primary missions at this point that I have no idea what to tackle first!

According to the official webpage, Xbox, PS4-5, PC and Stadia. I do not know if you could play on a mac through Stadia, but it runs quite well in a five year old laptop.

At a certain point you can get a bit fed up with Keanu/Johnny, but then his appeareances are well measured, so far. Not to be spoilerish, but he is your own personal ghost, and you even play him for a short while. And he has recorded quite long conversations.

The first Act was quite violent (at least as I played it) but now that I am settling in, yesterday I only choked two people unconscious in three hours play time. All the rest some talking and intimidation, and some creative hacking. And running around Japantown. I miss my bike. I have not done almost any sidequests, as staying alive seems more important, and events keep moving quite fast.

Right now I am at 20% advance, 10% Keanu, 5% mindbreak.

Some winks to Gibson, of course. But as expected, the vibe is much more Blade Runner 2049 and less original Blade Runner. Caught up in a doll story that seems straight out of Burning Chrome, but my fallen ninja bodyguard "friend" keeps distracting me with his whining requests...

Wait, Keanu talks to you??

Does it run on a Mac?

Only if you install Bootcamp…

And from what I'm seeing online PS4 really isn't even a valid option, despite it technically "running" on it—but so badly that it's almost comical.

I'm up to level 11 now and finally discovered I'd been carrying around this "shock" quickhack for quite some time without realizing just how fucking useful it is! You can literally hack a guy from a distance and shock him 2x and he's dead while you're a hundred yards away somewhere behind a wall. Or even further away if you hack into a camera system and kill the bad guys from hacking them from the views of the remote cameras they inevitably scatter throughout their complex. You only have to kill your way to the first Terminal in the complex and then you can settle down and shock everyone else to death who is within camera range in all the different rooms. All while remaining at a great distance from the action.

After a quite dark denouement to the story of the doll (that had me executing several unconscious gangers) we get a glorious view of a veve, some Haitian creole and the need to find a netrunning gang called the Voodoo Boyz. It will have to wait as the ninja wants me to hack a parade float.

And more dark, angry, long haired Keanu. He made a couple of interesting suggestions, however.

Still very absorbing, but some mechanics clash, such as building bullets out of ashtrays and playing cards. Unless I have a hidden nanoforge... But then why single out ashtrays?

Several strong women characters but no Molly analogue so far. Though the original Rogue in 2013 was quite Mollyesque, now she is pushing 80 and a fixer rather than a razorgirl.

I have been using shock from the beginning. It is even better against drones and highly metaled guys. But the opposition will send people looking for you, and if they catch you linked to a terminal it is a quick kill. It also raises the alarm, once they start seeing bodies, so it may hamper some missions. But I agree, it, combined with contagion, are my weapons of choice, together with a silenced pistol. With a better deck I also have loaded overheat, to have something to do while shock is in cooldown. In one case I did a round using up my RAM, and then ambushed the couple of guys that came looking for me. Add a second round of hacks and the opposition is over, Opposition netrunners can do the same back to you, so I crash cameras if I am not undetected.

We are pursuing very similar strategies of character leveling it sounds like! I also sprang for the 5 slot cyberdeck as basically my first major enhancement and about 80% of my perk points are invested in the QuickHack area. (The ones that add 50% damage if the hack is done while hidden and the one that expand the range of the hacks, in particular are amazing perks for my style of play.)

As Edit Engine observed on Twitter, the uglier the outfit, the more likely it is to be higher than whatever cool ensemble you've got going at the moment, haha. Like I ended up in a crop sweater, a crop tee, a pink and gray beanie and clogs last night, because they all had the highest armor ratings at that particular moment. 🙄

Edit was also complaining about a lot of the mechanics and the characters being sort of mix and match, but coming from the Witcher 3 it feels pretty much the same to me.

Yes, there is a similar vibe, but with a clear feeling of hurry that is not present in the Witcher 3. At first I felt it had a resemblance to Sleeping Dogs, that I liked a lot, but here what is missing is a faction and reputation system, as it was missing in the Witcher 3. I have been hitting a lot the Tyger Claws, but they are still civil to me and offer also gigs.

I had a fatal crash two thirds into the game (after the Oda fight). It is a reported but apparently rare event, so I doubt it will be patched soon. Even backtracking a couple of hours did not help, so I started a new character with all I had learned. Much easier when you know what you can and cannot do. Doing also a lot of gigs, with the pleasant surprise that they are linked and some give you alternate options in dialogue in the main quest. At street cred 10 and saving for a new deck (available at 11).

I usually always play in the same way. Caught up in the game I usually answer to events in the same way, so the replay factor of games like this is not very high. I will never avoid the wake, for instance (the cool gift is just the icing in the cake), and it is still my favorite event in the game.

There is a silly streak running through some equipment, however, that may be offputting. I confess I may sacifice a few armor points if the piece is hideous or ridiculous, such as when my best leg armor were extremely cut off shorts, or a minitop for the chest. I have some that I really like together, including a glitzy disco outfit, so I upgrade them all I can. The only time I have seen people react to your outfit is when you are naked, and it is not a big deal (though quite suicidal after the prologue).

The new Street Fighter season, which ain't cheap.

And it's Dan!  (By far the worse character in SFIV, as agreed upon by everyone.)  Also victim of translations from English to Japanese and back again for # of iterations.  I remember the character watching over the girl martial artists on some kind of cruise ship, around Brazil was it?

And... apparently the new Dan is actually awesome, at least for the next while.  This is going to read really weird.

Sure, I personally own Capcom OTC stock (here in the US), because I bought it back when you actually were allowed to.

Street Fighter has always interested me, despite the fact that I can't play well, because it might actually have the most diverse playing community online, and daily active.  (COD could be argued.)

Which makes this recent POG CHAMPION thing with GOOTECKS  baffling.  (I normally give someone who might be related, say, to a part of Asia which might have a unique perspective, given the last seventy five years, extra translation time.  Not that I watched a lot, but enough where, if you are familiar with this, what?)  (And I've been drawing question marks on Mike Ross for the last couple years.  Now I really don't know.)

But just because I own in Capcom doesn't mean I can't say this:  If I believed in the joystick, that working the moves was legit, I would put more time into playing.  I'm moving from PC keyboard to XBOX controller for PC.  Maybe the trials will work.  Regardless of the tightness needed to hit a button, if you do it quicker then slower, for hours, you should be bound to get lucky sooner or later.  Nope on trials, for something simple.  Yes, online is always different.  I'm just saying above the table makes more money.  This surprises no one.
