Garage_Rubin
Picking up where this thread left off... Didn't happen to me, didn't happen today, but I heard about it just a few hours ago. I guess that counts. Almost posted this in `News' because at this point it's still empty. Went to the convenience store about halfway through my shift, and was told someone had been stabbed the night before, a couple blocks up the street. So he'd come in to buy some iodine for his wound, bled all over the place, and of course they had to call the police and an ambulance... And of course the police had to close down the store to gather evidence, get statements from the staff on duty, etc. It was now a crime scene. He wasn't critically injured, btw, but still, he did get stabbed. :-\ So the store sat closed, with boundary tape all over the place saying `POLICE LINE - DO NOT CROSS' -- and blood on the floor -- from around 5:00 AM 'til whenever the cops felt like letting them open again. Business kind of peaks between 5:30 and 8:30 there, btw, the before-work crowd. So the next night, people were probably relieved and pleasantly surprised to see Mz.Night at work, in one piece. I'd missed the whole thing, hadn't gone there the night before. But still, wow. Cheers, Patrick. remotevoices
i always find police tape in those kind of situations unsettling. 2nd last day of work before christmas shut down. looked like week was going to be difficult. and certainly i was in later than planned till last night. but that gave me the chance to finish up and get out early tonight. some tidy up and issue stuff tomorrow. then full factory festive lunch. and that is me till 5th of january.
Psychophant
We have still three days to go, then cooking and eating till the 4th of January. This week I am running cooking tests, such as miniature gratin dauphinois, spicy octopus cream or Moroccan tuna pastille (the secret is the black olives). First business trip of the year will be the 12th, Ludwigshafen. Waiting a date are Krakow, Brussels and Milan. I finished all the real work today, so next week it will be cleaning up, ordering the file system and the inbox, and picking up bottles of wine, champagne, etc.. Corporate gift giving is back in force (I sent some fifty boxes) and wine is the usual choice. We must give away some, as there is not enough space home. Buying ten bottles in Bordeaux at the beginning of the month did not help. A good friend is coming from Munich and I promised I would reserve the new Star Wars, so I am avoiding most mentions of it. remotevoices
survived the christmas lunch. god, some folk really do lose all filters very very quickly. some colourful conversation, some carefully measured and averagely prepared festive standards, and i admit some laughs. could have done with leaving a half hour sooner, but so it goes. factory closed today, the office officially closes 23rd, but i had enough days. and i pretty much got myself cleared as well. though had to laugh at email that came in today saying "i never got your price from this email i sent you in october, but you at no point acknowledged receipt of" for an enquiry i never received. i'm still doing my best to avoid the star wars comments. i am pissed off by hype and the excessive, ugly merchandising. the whole sickening approach to the thing. like being assaulted on all fronts. especially given how much i did not enjoy the last ones. fuck it. (on other hand, brother and i have tickets booked for sunday morning, because like we aren't going to see it, and we finally agreed the sooner the better) (fuck it) ( )
Garage_Rubin
About to smoke my last because, reasons. The rest have been flushed. Left my lighter on a park bench downtown, and I'll dispose of any unused matches here, in a moment. This weekend's going to be busier than I'd like, at least for quitting purposes, but the distractions might actually take my mind off the nicotine withdrawals. I also have six books lined up, to fend off boredom and/or temptation during the quieter times this week -- and probably for a few more weeks after that. Normally I'd go through a book pretty quickly, but presently have less spare time than I'd like, on weekdays/nights. :-\ Wish me luck? Cheers, Patrick.

Garage_Rubin
Smoked it, squelched it, don't miss it. Yet. I certainly won't miss feeling like this afterward, which isn't too bad since that chest cold cleared up, but still [another prompt to quit, btw; it's embarrassing enough to step out of a *gym* to light up, but to hack and wheeze *while_smoking* is just silly]. And now, sleep, followed by a visit with Aspie Girl. :-) She'll distract me okay, I just know she will. All's well with Mz.Clean, btw, in part thanks to Aspie Girl. Cheers, Patrick.
db
Strongly recommend having carrot sticks (or just, you know, carrots) to help with the what do I do with my hands/what do I do with my mouth thing. Also, be prepared to be hacking like a tubercular patient for some time. I coughed much worse after I quit than while I was smoking (and I was a heavy smoker for many years). Vesper
Way past midnight, I landed back in Poland for a week (after a rather delayed flight and waiting extra time for my luggage... urgh). From what I hear, we're three steps away from a mono-right-wing-domination here, politically. I am scratching my head and wondering what the hell happened with the people while I've been away. I guess the conservative mummies rose again. Oh well, there's hope hidden in the barcode that embelishes my self-printed ticket back to where home actually is, nowadays. Psychophant
The day after the elections. We were a bit distracted, as we had the Christmas dinner with a big group of friends, 20 adults and 14 minors (from 10 to 17, so they are no longer children). We meet less often than we used to, when we were young and went out both Fridays and Saturdays, but it is still a great group. Lots of politics talk, and the clear realisation we are much more conservative than we used to be. It comes with the territory and the age, I suppose. We will be waiting to see if we get a government or if we will be voting again in three months. Politics as usual is clearly out. Then today I had a friendly talk with someone from the Pasteur institute at Lille about water pipes, plastic additives and PVC, as well as toxic metals. I suspect they wanted us to pay for some extra measurements but fortunately we know what we have in hand. Nanomaterial is becoming a dirty word.

db
Learned today that they've made an offer to someone for my position. Hope she accepts it! there are a lot of similar slots open around town. Regardless, she won't start until January 11, so I'll have at least one day's income in January since I will have to come in to the office the day after we return from Hawai'i. Oh, have I shared that we're going to Hawai'i? Scott's company is sending us to thank him for 20 years of awesome service. This has been the strangest and most stressful year ever, but we get to cap it off with a visit to somewhere we've never bothered to save up enough to go visit, even though we're eager to go. So yay! and added Minobot! Tomorrow: half day at work. Making tourtière for supper. Friday: Christmas. My last turkey with Mr Wolf. Saturday: Hateful Eight in 70 mm glory! Sunday: packing. Monday: off to Hawai'i first class, thank you very much! Tuesday: belated birthday dinner for my darling Pigkilla at Morimoto Waikiki. I don't even care what happens after that.
Garage_Rubin
Went to the last aspie get-together of the year. Sat beside Aspie Girl again, and brought her a Christmas present, which she liked. :-) In fact she liked the necklace enough to wear it the rest of the evening. We had a nice talk, which eventually got around to music, and I heard her sing, for the first time I think. She has a really amazing, sweet voice, btw, but may have been shy about it before. Also plays the flute, but I've never heard that before. Hope to, though. She also seemed to have more energy than she's had on other occasions [her days start really early], despite being busier now -- volunteering and having a part-time job. Seemed a bit paradoxical, but I guessed that doing more was building up her endurance, and she seemed to agree. BTW, while I was wrapping said present at work, Mz.Clean, having seen its contents, half jokingly warned me to make sure she's single before I throw myself at her. I think she is, although I'm not absolutely sure. I do know Mr.Motormouth has a crush on her, but manages to stifle any jealousy he might feel when I'm around her [I think I've mentioned him before; has Asperger's and ADHD, which in his case means he can't shut up to save his life, and being partially blind to social cues, honestly can't tell when he's bugging the shit out of people. So he just talks and talks and talks and... You get the idea]. I get the impression their relationship is a lot like mine and Mz.Clean's -- where he's `just a friend' but she's the love of his life, and she seems to tolerate that okay. Another time, when he wasn't around, she mentioned how happy he'd been to see a movie with her, and there was a kind of sadness in her voice when she said it -- the kind you reserve for a nice person you don't want to hurt, but can't see any way not to. Neither do I. He is a pretty good guy, well-meaning and basically decent. But I'm still going to live my life. I hope Mz.Clean doesn't pity me. :-\ After the gathering of the geeks, I told her she's still my favourite person; I just have a second-favourite now, which is true. She played dejected anyway, which was good for a laugh. :-) So anyway, about throwing myself at her. That may be the only way, because if Aspie Girl is anything like me [and she is], subtlety will just bounce off her. Therefore; Wish me luck? Mojo? A good parachute? Banzai, Patrick. TwiliteMinotaur
Late-stage wrist arthritis from Doom binge, and I need to Stylus-Photoshop two backgrounds and a walkcycle in 36 hours. #gamedev thuglife. Also, got 1000+ impressions on a Tweet and feel like I have passed either some invisible glass ceiling of microcelebrityhood or need to leave my Forester-esque screen-prison and plant a tree. Vesper
I stopped eating. For a moment. Urgh. One more day to go... I watched Network (Lumet, 1976) until 3:00 in the morning. Still creepily great and so-damn-relevant. Finally, meeting more interesting people in the area, virtually. Hoping for a much more social 2016! remotevoices
not sure i see the point of the WTF happened thread, unless i'm missing something subtle. can just post here as and when, without being too literal. spent christmas day with folks and brother. was quietish day, exchange of presents, drank tea till could drink no more tea, watched dr. who. boxing day (26th) met friend, we had a cuppa, then some dinner, talked and were done by about 6pm. sister works retail, so she gets sucked into sale preparation and sale kick off - being the true meaning of the season. so she came over sunday with the kids (niece, nephew, brother in law...). more excess food, exchange of gifts. so it goes. today, met brother late in the afternoon, had a wander round some pointless sales, had a cuppa, saw a film, went for dinner.
Psychophant
Food with family, food preparation (no photos), shopping for food, Fallout 4. I hope to have some time for friends tomorrow and the week-end. Today I am at work, which is why I have time to post, in between arranging deals with some potential sanction dodging Russians and some straightforward Russians now that we are back to being friends in Syria. That could affect the quality of luxury (in Russia, so standard European grade) washing machine powder detergent, so not exactly world shaking. Psychophant
Actually it was a meeting of all European producers, so all competitors in one table with a witness to make sure there are no shady dealings. I was all for it, but a Belgian company (Solvay) forbid his personnel outside Belgium of traveling to Brussels except by car, and two German ones were forbidden traveling to Belgium. Big companies are funny this way. This year I have been to Istamboul just after the Taxim square protests (though we moved our usual hotel, as it was one of those gassed), to Algeria after a tourist shooting incident, and to Russia in the middle of the sanctions and when the Dnepr conflict was hot, so I can confirm my company is not overly concerned. A coworker even went a month ago to Syria through Jordania, so I am not the only one. It is probably riskier to drive in Sao Paulo or certain parts of Mexico DF. remotevoices
Tonight was annual writing group festive get together. Third year I've attended. This time we were in the Merchant City. Meeting in Blackfriars pub, which was just a wall of noise. So useless for me and my crappy hearing (in environments like that everything just becomes a wall of noise and I struggle to hear people speak), which coupled with my introversion is a pain in the ass. Restaurant was across the road - a Spanish place. Though we were given the set menu as there were so many of us and half the people went for fish and chips, and I didn't see anything particularly Spanish about that. It was fine. Much more manageable for conversation. Afterwards ended up back in same pub, so same situation. Got home after midnight. Most proper social night of the holidays and good to see everyone at least.
